An Improved Vid of Water Under the Halter Ranch Bridge

Though it would seem impossible, the rain over the weekend made the waterfall even more beautiful. Check out those reflections!

Into the Earth

This system of caves--currently being dug into the hillside immediately behind our new winery facility--will allow passive temperature control for future barrel storage.  No forklifts will be driven in the caves for both safety and environmental reasons so all barrels will be brought in and stacked by hand!

Last call for 2005 Ancestor!

We are down to the last few cases of Ancestor 05! A great wonder it has been to witness its growth from a somewhat young, tannin focused wine to the delicate and still ageworthy masterpiece it has become. Don't miss out on your chance to secure a bottle before its gone!

Fire and Water on Block 26

I recently joined Vineyard Manager Mitch Wyss for a walk through the vines as they were being pruned.  The overall experience was, as is typical here on the ranch, beautiful, illuminating, and inspiring.  I will try to convey in type just one small portion of a greater picture that is best experienced in person.

Our Sauvignon Blanc, Block 26, is planted to the Northeastern corner of the vineyard.  The site is unique to our 1000 acre property as it lies at a point in the vineyard where two very different ancient environments meet.  The majority of the ranch is composed of limestone that was once a vast sea bed and the eastern tip of this upthrust extends into Block 26.  Meeting the edge of the seabed, at a point where the soil takes on a reddish hue, is a vein of very dark and dense rock--unusual on this side of Paso Robles--that is volcanic in origin.  Thus within our single 3 acre block of Sauvignon Blanc we are presented with the remnants of two dynamically opposed elements of the ancient world!

A Taste of Things to Come

Each year we hold our Summer Orchard Dinner beneath this small stand of olive trees.  Halter Ranch vineyard manager Mitch Wyss has planned a larger planting of olive trees Southwest corner of the property.  Once producing, a combination of the newer trees and the old ones in the photograph will provide the raw material for our very own Halter Ranch Olive Oil!

Happy 2011!

I find few things quite as comforting as a glass of red wine in a cozy place during days like this. Come help us celebrate the first week of the new year while the sky makes its presence known and the soil continues to swell in waterlogged anticipation of sunny days to come!
